How we treat ourselves shapes everything else
Our first and most important relationship is that with ourselves. It shapes how we show up for others and how we walk through the world. It starts with how we treat ourselves. How we talk to ourselves. How we honor ourselves. And it spills over into the way we perceive and receive the world.
Ironically, this relationship is often one that is abandoned, wrapped up in a belief of being available to others. With the immense amount of distractions of our current culture, expectations and societal roles, and the mere bandwidth we have available for what we can carry out in a day – it is not surprising that something has to give, in order to have time and space for our priorities. The question then becomes, what are our priorities? Do we bake ourselves into those priorities? What are our basic needs, the fundamentals, that serve the rest of our day and life? What are our passions, dreams and aspirations? What are the things we want to explore and learn?
A few questions to ponder: Are we catering to our body, supporting it in its functions and optimal health? What are we feeding our hungry mind? What is the inner dialogue like? Are we blindly believing all the thoughts that run through our head, including the judgmental voice that we’re carrying around? Are we believing the stories we keep telling ourselves? Are we caring for ourselves like we would a dear one? Energetically, what are our boundaries? What are the things that slowly eat away at our sanity? What is the company we keep? What are the things that steal our attention and what are the things that matter to us? Are we allowing that which we value to be part of our lives?
Yes, many of these contemplations may seem hard to implement, even indulgent to think about, in a world full of demands and injustices. Perhaps it feels out of reach for you to contemplate your dreams and ambitions. But – and I hate to be the one to break the news – if you don’t bring your gaze around and take a moment to look inward, time will take you on a ride where soon years will have gone by and your small ways of abandoning yourself will have turned into a decade long detour away from your own life.
This is why it is important to pause. Make time for a reset. Dare to look at your values (even if for the first time) and realign with those values. This type of work is about learning the ways we abandon ourselves, so that we can make conscious decisions to realign with what matters to us. It’s about bringing the gaze inward and onward. Yes we pause to learn from the past and bless the experiences that brought us here, but with the intention of letting these insights teach us how to get more creative and resourceful moving forward.
For you, it may be about taking action, or perhaps it’s an inner exploration for a while before you know what you want to implement. For some, this is about creating sustainable spaciousness for yourself, to take up more space in your day-to-day. For some, it’s about building courage to be yourself more, expressing yourself in ways that may not be expected by those around you. For some, it‘s about exploring what your core values are. For others, it’s about looking at self-worth and forgiveness, in order to take your agency back. For some, it’s totally clear what you’re missing and what you want more of, and thus, it’s about coming up with sustainable ways to make it part of your everyday life. For many, it is not about new information but about making space for that which you already know. And with this, it’s about dropping distractions and procrastination mechanisms that hold you at an arms lengths distance from what you want, or what you know nourishes you. For most, it’s about embodiment of your truth and a wholehearted vow, re-committing to yourself.
This type of work serves as a reset and recalibration. We have to do this inner digging continuously, to stay in alignment as we live and evolve. It is natural that we find ourselves in periods of confusion or disconnect. These times are blessed times, as difficult as they may feel, serving as pointers to the changes and possibilities that nurture our evolution.
Commitment to Self is about all aspects of self; physical, mental, emotional, energetic and spiritual. It’s about the person that is you. It is equally about the life force that is moving through you. It’s about how these seemingly two different aspects of experience intermingle, are honored, nurtured and cared for. It’s sacred work.
Sorry to spill the beans again – no one else can do this work for you. The way you show up for yourself is of paramount importance. Your life depends on it.
The moment you step into the current of your own aspirations and ambitions, and continue to take steps to honor your heart calling, from small to large, empowered action will become the new operating system that is fortified over time. Experiencing this reinvigorates the energetic memory of what it means to live in alignment. This resonance is something you carry with you for life.
This whole thing is about sustainably living your truth and giving others permission to do the same. We want this for those we love. Can you extend that love to yourself?
We die alone. And we die the way we lived. How you honor the life you’ve been given, shapes how you experience it and what you get to experience.
